General Notes for Child Joseph COOK

Joseph Cook, the oldest child of Isaac Cook and Charity Wright, was born Dec 23, 1763 at the Bush River Monthly Meeting in Newberry County, South Carolina. During the Revolutionary War, he was taken prisoner by a band of pirates, who attempted to force Joseph to enter their b and or suffer the death penalty. Joseph, being a member of the Societ y of Friends, as well as loyal to his county, refused to join thier ba nd. While the pirates were parleying as to, what to do with him. Mar y Herbert, Joseph's future wife, came along and stepping in among the m told the pirates that Joseph belonged to her, and for them to let hi m go free.

As they could not see fit to do this, Mary grabbed Joseph up in her ar ms and started off with him. Thinking she would not be able to go far . the Capitan of the band shouted, "When you put him down, we will sta rt shooting" As a result of this decision on their part. Mary promptl y preceded to carry him out of range of their guns, and in all probabi lities this was all that saved his life.

At this time, Joseph was about 17 years old and Mary was about one yea r younger. After hearing this story, his own son Peter, said to his fa ther, " No wonder thee married her, father ."

Joseph and Mary were married on November 30 1782, at Bush River Monthl yMeeting in South Carolina , where they resided until Mary 's death o nApril 24 1807 , at the age of 42 years, three months and 9 days . T o thisunion was born twelve children .

Soon after the death of Mary in 1807, Joseph moved with his family , t othe state of Ohio; where they were received at the Monthly Meeting o nOctober 3 1809. Their certificate was dated April 30 1807 at Bush Riv erMonthly Meeting . Here he lived for several years . He married toEli zabeth Mills on March 28 1809 at Fairfield Monthly Meeting , adaughte r of Reuben Mills and Cecelia Johnson Mills , who had lived theirlif e time in Belmont County , Ohio .

To this union were born four children . Later Joseph and family move d toIndiana , where he spent the remainder of his life. A few years b eforehis death , he had an attack of paralysis which so impaired his s peech ,that he could hardly hold intelligent conversation . in his ol d age , hedisplayed the great innocence of childhood appearing almos t like a child.
