He moved to Barry County, Missouri where he made his home until 1865 , when he moved to Stone County, Missouri and made his home for one y ear on the site of the Crane post office. He moved to his farm and lat er added to the original tract until he owned 183 acres with about 16 0 of it cleared. For a number of years he worked at the carpenter trad e.
During the civil war he served about two years in Enlisted Missouri Mi litia, Company A of Allens Regiment and operated in south west, Missou ri and northern Arkansas, being in active scouting expeditions most o f the time. He was never captured or wounded. He had previously serve d as Corporal in Home Guards. In 1866, he served in the registratio n office of Stone County, and in 1882 he was elected county Judge fro m North District. He served two years. In 1886 he was selected presidi ng judge for four years.
