Husband's General Notes
This information was taken from a copy of a legal paper made by Willis Ennis(ggrandson) involving the Ennis Estate.
James Ennis born at Athlone County, Westmeath, Ireland, 1735. That he (James) at the age of 3 years old came to as a stowaway with his father, Sir John Ennis, settled in Virginia, County of Augusta. That said James Ennis is the one and same James Ennis who in the month of Feb, 1776, enlisted in the 9th Regiment of the Virginia. And he is the one and same James Ennis that, who was taken prisoner in the Battle of Germantown on the 4th day of Oct. 1777. And died in prison in or about the year 1778.
James Ennis father's name was Sir John Ennis born at Athlone County, Westmeath, Ireland on or about the year 1710. And 1733, Married. And from this union James Ennis was the one and only child and him to all the towns and lands of Aguha, Cashed, Momragh, Bananarow, Caldragh, Tullaghmore. Knickcullen, Gortuarane, Agapolo, Killacross, all situated in the Barony of Leitrim.
Sir John Ennis hired lands and property from his father, John Ennis, who lived in Athlone County, Westmeath, Ireland. John Ennis married and to this union was born 2 children. John Ennis (later known as Sir John Ennis) As here before stated Mary Catherine who was a substantial land holder at warren County, down Ireland and that said Mary Catherine died instate and her property reverted to what is known as “Dormorana” (dormant) Fund and that I further state about the year 1738.
The said Sir John Ennis became involved in killing an officer of the law*. And with his son James age 3, fled to the United States of America, left his property and lands. And one George Johnston became possed of by lease dated June 11, 1744 embracing all lands and property here in before set forth all situated in the Barony County, Lectrin.
I further state that Sir John Ennis and others brought suit against George Johnston on said lease dated June 11, 1744. Embracing all towns and lands mentioned and that Sir John Ennis being force to flee to America never received any financial benefit form said towns and lands. And upon the death of George Johnston in the year of 1778. His son Robert Johnston entered into and forcefully took possession of all the lands covered by said lease June 11, 1744. I further state that on Dec. 19, 1800 the said Robert Johnston granted release of said towns and lands as set forth in said lease date June 11, 1744 to William Slack and Thomas Stewart upon trust to pay the head rent of said lands an annuity of 46 pounds unto said Robert Johnson. Granted another indenture of trust covering said lands and property as set forth in said lease date June 11, 1744. And here in stated in William Slack of Armddall and Thomas Peyton Lahee in said county.
Lt. Colonel in H.M. Regiment of Leitrim Militia and Isaac Baker of Clonledogon County, ESQ. Of 3rd part and William Parrons and George Plray of Carduff of the 4th to pay certain head rents.
Legacies and debts of October 1804 of said Robert Johnston. I further state that on the 14th day of October 1804 the said Robert Johnston published his last will, which confirmed the deed trust of October 4, 1803. I further dispose and say that neither Sir John Ennis, nor his heirs have received any benefit from the towns and lands of Ireland and that the affidavits affixed are a part there of.
(note:I recieved this from my aunt Bessie (Hilton) Barnes who found a copy of this in my grandmothers Chloe (Hall) Hilton personal belongings. Chloe received it from her sister Alta (Hall) McCurry in 1976.
*Family legend is two different verisons of the same basic fact.
Version one is: Sir John killed the officer of the law because Sir John killed an Egret and was going to be arrested for it.
Version two is: Sir John held a rather large piece of property. The officer of the law was harassing his tenants over taxes to be collected.
General Notes for Child Zachariah ENNIS
Zachariah Ennis was born in/about 1766 in either Augusta or Albemarl e County, Virginia colony, one of eight children born to James and Ann a (Moles) Ennis. His grandson, Willis Lyons Ennis, stated "Zachariah E nnis who was born in Augusta Co., State of Virginia, in the year of 17 66, and who died in Madison County, State of Ark. 4th day of Nov, 1844 ." His father fought in the American Revolution while Zachariah was a small boy. "James Ennis is one and same James Ennis who in the mon th of February 1776 enlisted in the 9th Regiment of the American Revol utionary Forces from the County of Augusta, State of Virginia."
He was a farmer and planter. Zachariah was reared to adulthood in Virg inia. As a young man, he emigrated with the family to the Morgan District of Burke County, North Carolina, before 1790. They were enumerated in the first U. S. Census in Burke County in that year. The family s ettled on a farm near the Catawba River in the vicinity of Lovelady Ford. The family were members of the Lovelady Church. Many years later, this area of Burke became a part of Caldwell County. Zachariah was married to Susannah (Anna) Bradshaw about 1798 in Burke County, North Carolina.
Anna was born about 1770 in Burke County, North Carolina colony. They settled on a farm near the Catawba River. The proceeding deed was found among the papers of Willis Lyons Ennis:

Rec'd of Zachariah Enous Jr. the sum of one dollar & 62 cents his fee in full for recording his Deed from Zachariah Ennis, Senr, August 3rd 1830.
John W. Garrett D.C. & C.
After Anna's death in 1815, Zachariah moved with the Bradshaw family to Adair County, Kentucky. He received a land patent for two hundred ac res on Cabin Fork Creek near the settlement of Glensville in 1817. Family historians do not state that Zachariah ever remarried after the death of Anna, but a female in his same age range was living in his household in the 1830 U. S. Census for Adair County, Kentucky. He lived near Cabin Fork Creek from 1817 until 1839. He paid personal taxes in Adair County during his tenure there. A receipt for the recording of a deed to his son, Zachariah Ennis, Jr., was found among the papers of Willis Lyons Ennis:
An I.O.U. for fifty-five cents was also found in the papers of his gra ndson, Willis Lyons Ennis:
"$0.55, Due Clayton Miller fifty five cents. Augt 7th, 1833.
Gideon (his X mark) Bradshaw
Zachariah (his X mark) Ennis, Sr.
In 1839, Zachariah Ennis, Sr., moved with his children, Elisha Ennis and Annie (Ennis) Vinson, and his niece, Barbara (Ennis) Terry, to Madi son County, Arkansas. They settled near Huntsville on War Eagle Creek where Zachariah died in 1844. He was buried in an unmarked grave
