Joseph owned an 80 acre farm two miles southwest of Roseburg, Indiana. He was engaged in the manufacture of tile for several years and wa s quite successful. In 1864 he was pressed into the service of the Army while his wife lay dying on her death bed. Joseph was conscientiously opposed to war and was released by paying the government $300. dollars. His wife died March 1, 1864. They were all members of the Friends Church at Maple Run and are buried at the cemetery in Marion, Indiana. He died at his home, two miles South West of Roseburg, Indiana .

Two of the daughters Ruth and Emeline not returning from school one evening, and since there was a unbroken forest of several Hundreds acres between the home and school, a search was made by neighbors all night .The girls were found the next morning at the home of the only neighbor who had not been notified.
